History

Established in 1994, Whitehaven is a small, privately-owned winery located in Blenheim, New Zealand. Winemaker Sam Smail has earned a reputation for crafting distinctive and critically-acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc from the renowned Marlborough region. The vines here bask in warm sunlight and cooling breezes from the coast, translating to well-balanced wines with brilliant flavours.

Regional Information

Marked with intensely concentrated fruit, vintage 2017 produced exceptional quality. Summer started early in Marlborough, boosting flavour development. As summer moved forward, temperatures began to cool. By April, wetter-than-usual conditions quenched the soil after several dry seasons, leading to a slightly compressed harvest timeline. Vintage 2017 is vibrant, balanced, fruit-forward and distinctively Marlborough.

Vinification Details

Our Sauvignon Blanc grapes were destemmed, but not crushed before being lightly pressed with minimal skin contact. In order to achieve a high degree of clarity, we allowed the free run juice to settle. Fermentation took place in upright stainless steel tanks at very low temperatures for up to 30 days to preserve the fruit flavours.
